May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and if you’re going through a divorce (or getting ready to ask for one) there is no better time to prioritize your emotional well-being.  The divorce process can be tough!  Making big decisions and changes can be emotionally draining and take a serious toll on your mental and physical health. That’s why I want to talk about the importance of maintaining your mental wellness during divorce.

1, 2, 3, S-T-R-E-T-C-H!

First, do what you can to take care of yourself physically! A healthy combination of exercise, sleep, hydration, and a well balanced diet can do wonders for your mood and your ability to make decisions.  Treating your body well may be the last thing you want to do right now, but it is the most important thing that you can do to take care of yourself during this transition.  If possible, consider working with a trainer or sign up for a membership at a gym that has classes that interest you.  If the gym isn’t your thing, find a dance class or a walking buddy to keep you accountable.  Make time to stretch your muscles so that your stress doesn’t get stored in your body.  Give yourself the gift of movement and endorphins.  Taking care of your body will help you start to feel better now and it will set you up for an amazing post divorce glow up, amiright?!

Treat Yo’self

Another key ingredient to maintaining your mental wellness is self-care. I’m talking about doing things that make YOU happy. Maybe that’s soaking in a bubble bath, indulging in a juicy novel, or spending time with your friends. Prayer, meditation, gratitude, and mindfulness can also go a long way toward helping you restore your internal balance.  It can be easy to fixate on the divorce but try to rememebr that it is only a temporary part of your life.  Make sure you’re taking time to prioritize your needs as a whole and healthy person.

Finally, don’t be afraid to seek professional help.  Most people were not taught how to navigate the changes that come with divorce; this is new territory!  If you are feeling overwhelmed, talking to a therapist, a doctor, a divorce coach, or a counselor at law can be super helpful.  These professionals are trained to make space for you to feel your feelings and figure out what comes next.  They can give you tools to cope with all those gnarly emotions, guide you in managing the stress and anxiety that comes with divorce, and help you make a plan to move forward.  If you’re feeling stuck, start by calling 813-602-2989 to schedule a time to speak with us.  We’re here to help!
